Witness Testimony

"This object was not observed in the field as it was found in image, once I returned from the trip. It was silent. The EXIF info shows focal length of lens as 17mm, which in bright daylight such as this should place everything from 2 feet to infinity in focus. Shutter speed was 1/250th of a second.There is no lens dirt on the prior or post photograph taken within minutes. Artifact is inconsistent with dust on the sensor. What can this be?
