Witness Testimony

"About 10:30 in the evening, I went out on our lawn overlooking Lake Champlain to look at a red moon that had risen earlier that night, but was disappointed to see thick cloud cover had concealed it. I nevertheless saw several very bright stars to the south; at first I thought it must be Mars and Venus, though they were in the wrong place, the wrong size, and were much too large and orange. They were also below the heavy cloud cover. I then realized there were three more lights, and they formed a shape reminiscent of the Big Dipper handle and edge of the ladle, except, again, in the wrong part of the sky. My sister and her friend joined me. We looked through binoculars and could see no running lights indicating a plane; in any event, they were too close together and moving in a sort of formation. They moved slowly, never changing level, and grew closer. They seemed quite high up. There were no engine sounds. One by one, they disappeared upward, although the last light remained for some time. We asked several neighbors if they might have released Chinese lanterns for a celebration but none had. The lights seemed too large, intense, steady, and uniform in motion to be lanterns.

Unfortunately we did not have the presence of mind to record the lights, although we did look at them through binoculars. The lights were very reminiscent of the handle and bottom edge of the Big Dipper: X = intense red orange light.
The lights moved toward us at a uniform rate of speed and stayed in formation."
